Remembering Keith Fairben

Keith Fairben of Floral Park did not just decide to become a life saver, it was in his blood. Keith’s father Kenneth was a volunteer firefighter for over 30 years. Undoubtedly this unselfish giving of oneself rubbed off on Keith who followed in his father’s footsteps.

Keith did not look at EMS as just a job. He volunteered his time at his local fire department, had completed medic school, and was looking to make EMS into a career.

Keith also had a sense of humor. Anecdotes range from toilet papering co-worker’s ambulances to greasing the door of his supervisor’s office. His mother nicknamed him “The Adrenaline Kid” for his constant on the go lifestyle managing a full time job, school, volunteering, and a social life.

Records of the Fire Department’s EMS dispatch system indicate that he and his partner, Mario Santoro, arrived at the World Trade Center within minutes after the first plane hit that September morning. They immediately went to work doing what they did best… tending to the injured so that those hurt would live to go home.

Keith never made it home that night. His father, joined by fellow volunteer firefighters went to the site in the days after the collapse to help search the rubble, but to no avail.

Attendance at the memorial service for Keith on October 2, 2001 in Floral Park flowed out of the church and into the square park across the street. Such was the impact on so many people did one man make.
